About Franklin Township
Dutch settlement in the Raritan Valley dates to about 1650. The township played a role in Revolutionary War movements along the King's Highway, and its modern identity was transformed by the Delaware and Raritan Canal, opened in 1834. Franklin Township officially espouses the theory that its name honors Benjamin Franklin.
Today Franklin combines dense residential and business districts with preserved open space and historic villages. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 69,105 residents as of July 1, 2025.
